Digging Up Potatoes

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

I have been digging up my potatoes this bank holiday. I had quite a few Desiree and some Cara. The latter are a particular favourite of the slugs and so the crop was not as good as I would like. Still, there are enough to keep me going through the winter.
I took them home and [...]

Friend or Foe

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

I’m not sure if this is friend or foe. It doesn’t look native to these shores, so it could well be an invader. Still, they do eat ahipds and the like, even if they eat ladybirds as well! Greedy cannibal things.

Potato Plants

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

I have left the potatos in the ground this year as I seem to be being given them by everyone. I will take them out and store later on, but not hust yet. They will be fine in the ground, as long as the slugs leave them alone.

Greens

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

I have netted the rest of my greens too and they seem to be coming on OK, avoiding the slugs and putting on growth. They should be good come winter time.

Courgette Hope

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I say hope, as this year I would like to have a good crop of courgettes. The last time they took and survived was three years ago. OK, I know I had a few last year, but it was not the bumper crop I had in the first year.
So this year I have grown them [...]

Courgettes

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I planted out my courgettes this week. I’m hoping that the slugs will not find them as tasty as I do. We will see. I have held a couple back in case of the inevitable.

Runner Beans

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The beans are out now too. Once again, I hope the slugs do not eat them. But it has rained a little lately and that encourages them to eat.

Greens

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I have been growing my greens under netting, hence the cast on these pics. They are so far not slug food and I hope they remain that way as they have a long way to go – some of these are sprouts.
Note the dead fly in the bottom right of the first pic.

Slugs

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Here is a picture of my slug trap.
I have put an old spud out that I dug up and put pellets round it to attract the little critters.
As you can see it has mainly worked and a lot are dead. Long may it go on.

Bees

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Talking of bees the other day. Here is one that was in my garden looking for a suitable place to settle and get warm as it’s not been hot of late and they are out and about.
I love the gossamer look to the wings and the wrap around shades for eyes.

Peas in a Pod

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I have gone and done it and planted peas this year. I am not trusting them to the soil as mice ate them last year. I have a cunning plan this year……..

Comfry Time

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

The comfry is coming on nicely. It’s another plant that bees like, so I am hopeful of attracting them to my plot. Last year the allotment association chopped it down thinking it was a weed when they were tidying up the paths between plots. I mean, you’d think they would know it is great green [...]
